SUMMARY:New Mersey Poets: Saint Vespaluus
DESCRIPTION:Liverpool’s Spoken Word and Poetry scene is at its most exciting and vibrant since the days of the Liverpool Poets back in the late 1960s.\nLegendary When Skies Are Grey contributor Saint Vespaluus brings his unique brand of fast-paced verse and brilliant spoken word stories to life at Jimmy’s this autumn.\nAfter curating a season of Spoken Word nights at Calderstones Mansion and appearances at the Baltic Festival and Liverpool Sound City\, Saint Vespaluus will be showcasing his world – a land where language is power\, but where men are too scared to say ‘Happy Birthday’ and where the dreaded Wind-Up Merchant gets his come-uppance.\nIt’s a vision of life where electro-pop stars cause unfixable family rifts; where New Romantic demo’s end in weedy violence; where men try so hard to sound ‘Scouse’ that they end up morphing into stereotyped pirates – and where the pastry flakes of motorway service station ‘jumbo’ sausage rolls cause ‘Godfather’-type repercussions. Oh\, and the true cost of lost parrots\, the dangers of sweary hip-hop Romantic poets – and the whys\, wherefores and the philosophy of what actually constitutes being a meff will all be revealed on the night!\nThere will be full support from some of Liverpool’s most talented Spoken Word performers in what will be an unforgettable night of word and verse. \n\nRoy (EXTRA SPECIAL GUEST!)\nWe’re delighted and privileged to have the undisputed star of Merseyside’s spoken word as our special guest this evening. Roy has performed all over the country and delighted audiences with his genius observations of Liverpool life. Algorithm Party – his brilliant\, best-selling collection of urban tales – was published by Rough Trade last year and attracted a new audience for a wholly unique writing style. Roy has been heard many times on BBC 6 Music and he was a guest artist on the last Jacqui Abbott and Paul Heaton album Manchester Calling. \n \n\nJanaya Pickett\nJanaya Pickett is a Liverpool born history enthusiast with a special interest in Liverpool’s Black history and culture. She has written and performed poetry widely throughout the city\, and is currently working with the literary organisation Writing on the Wall\, curating a soundscape for their Very Public Art/Mersey Sounds exhibition at the Pier Head. Janaya has a unique poetic voice and is a brilliant live artist.\n\nPaddy Clarke\nPaddy Clarke is a writer and musician who has been performing poetry and music for several years\, having performed at Sound City for the last three years and has supported a number of big name bands includingThe Membranes. His poetry and fiction have also been featured in such places as The Manchester Anthology For New Writing\, Ad Alta: The Birmingham Literary Journal and The Quality Of Mersey poetry anthology. He was shortlisted for the Oxford 2021 Flash Fiction Prize. Paddy is an outstanding talent!\n\n \n\nPlazzy Bag\nPlazzy Bag (also known as Lou Fitz) is one half of the spoken word collective Magpies and Pigeons and an exceptional poet in her own right. Her poetry is at turns deeply serious and laugh out loud funny. She  performed at last year’s Turn Ylour Love Around festival and has made two unforgettable  performances at The Reader’s Calderstone Mansion monthly poetry evenings.\n\nGet your tickets now! \n18+

SUMMARY:Bobhowla
DESCRIPTION:Following the release of their debut record ‘Everything’s Wrong\, But It’s Alright’ in February\, Bobhowla finally get to officially launch the album live with a return show at Jimmy’s.\n\n\nReleased by local label 9X9 Records\, the debut album comes on the back of a clutch of intriguing singles. After years of solo performances within the north-west of England\, singer Howard Doupe’s emotionally aligned songs take on a whole different meaning when presented under the Bobhowla moniker. \n\n\nTaking off from the classic indie starting blocks\, the band released their debut single\, double A-side (Sail Down The Water / Music Keeps Calling) in 2019. This mission statement evidences interweaving of folk and experimental elements. Combined with studio soundscapes\, present a contemporary Anglo-American songbook – an empowering melee of introspective contemplation. Drawing comparisons along the way from an eclectic mix including Depeche Mode\, Roddy Frame and Tears For Fears.\n\n\n\n18+\n

With live music soon to be back they then released the anthem of the summer with their third hit\, Those Are The Days\, the perfect celebration of live music returning! The latest hit boasts memories of music festivals and is a trip down memory lane filling us all with nostalgia\, a song with pure energy that just needs to be heard live. \nThe band are made up of Tom Smith (vocals)\, Daniel Ashcroft (lead guitar) and Steve Jillings (bass)\, three close friends who all grew up in Failsworth\, Manchester. After forming in March 2020 the boys had to overcome instant obstacles which had arisen due to the global pandemic. They certainly took it in their stride and got straight to work on some material\, which they managed to showcase as early as June for a live-stream show on MMTV Unlocked. They are now armed with a full-set which they are ready to blow people away with this summer in what will be a string of long awaited appearances to finally perform in front of their fast growing fan base. \nAn amazing night of music in store with The Haciendas being joined by the brilliant Rhyl rockers\, The Montagues\, showcasing their stadium sized riffs and their latest hit ‘Devils’. Also joining them on stage will be the three piece indie band from Merseyside\, Northern Revelation. \n18+ \n

SUMMARY:LIPA Live Lounge
DESCRIPTION:The LIPA Live Lounge – a night of live music provided by students at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. \nJoin The Liverpool Institute for Performing Art’s very own artists and bands at the Live Lounge\, where they will be showcasing performances of their original songs and brilliant covers by a wide range of artists that inspire them. As well as providing music from the students\, the LIPA Live Lounge is a series of events which we hope will allow the Liverpool music community to come together\, and network with like-minded people. \nRia\nRia is a 20-year-old Liverpool based singer-songwriter\, originally from Southampton. Ria captivates her audience effortlessly with her smooth vocals\, intricate riffs and a voice full of soul\, and is influenced by artists such as Blondie\, Alicia Keys and Emeli Sande. You can expect to hear new\, original music from Ria soon\, so follow her Instagram to keep updated! \nZander \nOriginally from Leeds\, Zander has relocated to Liverpool where he is creating a mix of indie pop/rock with dream-pop guitar tones and natural sounding vocals. His song writing style\, not too dissimilar to artists such as: Mac Demarco or Buck Meek\, sounds lights and simple from the outside but lyrically touches on heavier personal topics. Having just released the single ‘Small Loop’ on all streaming platforms\, 2021 is a year with two more releases scheduled for Zander. \nThe Lazy Sundaze \nThe Lazy Sundaze are an indie rock band based in Liverpool. They are influenced by bands such as Arctic Monkeys\, Royal Blood\, Jamie T and Sam Fender. Lazy sundaze bring both upbeat heavy indie rock songs along with more chilled songs at gigs with lyrics about relationships\, youth and current issues such as mental health in our song “devil sits on my shoulder.” They have recently performed online gigs such as the tube as well as isolated live music videos to keep their fanbase ticking and bring new followers. Currently they are working on lots of material to release in the months coming… They have been practicing every week writing new material and getting their current songs nailed!!! \nThe LIPA Live Lounge has been created by third year LIPA management student Georgia Clarkson\, as a result of her lockdown project “The Lockdown Live Lounge” which was set up to give artists a platform to perform and promote themselves during a time where they weren’t able to perform live due to the Covid-19 restrictions at the time. However\, now that restrictions have started to lift\, Georgia\, Georgina (third year tech and production student) and Molly Nock (second year management student) have come together to set up the event live and in-person for everyone to enjoy – not just LIPA students! The LIPA Live Lounge team are so excited to launch their first event at Jimmy’s! \nFollow them on social media for future event announcements:\nInstagram: @lipa_livelounge\nFacebook: LIPA Live Lounge \n18+

SUMMARY:A. A.Williams
DESCRIPTION:Making her stage debut in April 2019 and selling out her first headline show at\nLondon’s prestigious Southbank Centre less than a year later\, A.A. Williams has hit the\nground running. Similarly\, the acclaim for her performances and her music has been\nunanimous from the start. After one self-titled EP and the 10” vinyl collaboration Exit in\nDarkness with Japanese post-rockers MONO\, the London-based singer-songwriter has\nsigned to Bella Union and made a stunning debut album\, Forever Blue.\nA rapturous blend of post-rock and post-classical\, Forever Blue smoulders with\nuncoiling melodies and haunted atmospheres\, shifting from serenity to explosive\ndrama\, often within the same song. Williams is a fantastic musician as well as\nsongwriter\, playing the guitar\, cello and piano\, and her voice has the controlled delivery\nof a seasoned chanteuse whilst still channelling the rawest of emotions.\nForever Blue is named after a song that didn’t make the album’s final cut\, “but it still\nencapsulated these songs\,” Williams explains. “It sounded timeless and in the right\nplace.” The album’s threads encapsulate the anxieties and addiction of love and loss\nwith haunting detail\, for example ‘Glimmer’(“I wasn’t meant to see the sun washed out\nand pale / I wait undone / I wasn’t meant to be the one hollow and hurt and meant for\nnone”)\, though Williams admits the theme was shaped more by her subconscious than\nany grand plan.\n“The lyrics come at the end\, they fall into place\, rhythmically\, and link together\,” she\nexplains. “And then it’s my job to decipher what I’ve written! I want the words to get my\npoint across but still let the listener map on their own experiences. I find it really\ntherapeutic.”\nTherapy is intrinsic to Williams’ approach: to not just express and unpick her feelings of\nlonging and loss but to work through them. “Verbalising something\, you feel a weight\nhas been lifted\,” she says. The transition can be mirrored in the dynamic shift from\n‘quiet’ to ‘loud’\, as on ‘Glimmer’ and arguably at its most euphoric on ‘Melt’. “There’s\nsomething very satisfying and elating about songs that have that drop in them\, to stomp\non the guitar pedal on and let it all out.”\nIt’s testament to Williams’ skills\, and those of husband and bassist Thomas Williams\,\nthat Forever Blue’s commanding sound was largely captured at the couple’s two-\nbedroom flat in North London. Drums by Geoff Holroyde were added at engineer Adrian \nHall’s studio in South London\, with guest vocals from Johannes Persson (Cult Of Luna)\,\nwho adds his deep-trawling growl to ‘Fearless’ (“he sounds like Tectonic plates moving”\nWilliams feels)\, Fredrik Kihlberg (Cult Of Luna) on ‘Glimmer’ and Tom Fleming (ex-Wild\nBeasts) on ‘Dirt’.\nWilliams can scarcely believe she’s in such exalted company\, or that her band has\ntoured with Cult Of Luna\, Russian Circles\, Explosions In The Sky\, Nordic Giants and\nSisters Of Mercy\, whilst performing with MONO at their 10 th anniversary show. It’s not\nbecause she doesn’t trust her own worth but that Williams only became a singer-\nsongwriter by chance.\nHaving taken music lessons from the age of six and been immersed in classical music\,\nWilliams’ life was forever changed when she discovered Deftones in her mid-teens\, “and\nafter them\, all things heavy\,” she recalls. “It was music that made me feel included\, that\ntapped into me.”\nYet it was only years later\, when she found a guitar in the street with a note attached\,\n“please take me\, just needs work\,” that Williams started playing guitar\, and only started\nwriting songs as a way of learning how to play. “I wrote in different styles to find a\nsound I was comfortable with\,” she says. “Likewise\, with singing. I’d never before\nthought of singing with a microphone in front of other people. It’s been quite a journey.”\nThat journey was thrown off course by the Coronavirus lockdown\, but Williams’\nresponse has been the ‘Songs From Isolation’ video project\, solo renditions of songs\nsuggested by her fans. At the time of writing\, she has performed Radiohead’s ‘Creep’\n(“to take on a song like that\, you either have to be brave or dumb\, and I thought\, let’s be\nbrave!”)\, Gordon Lightfoot’s ‘If You Could Read My Mind’ and Nick Cave’s ‘Into Your\nArms’.\nAs ‘Songs From Isolation’ keeps posting intimate messages from a place of solitude\,\nForever Blue will spread the news of A.A. Williams’ extraordinary talent far and wide –\nand once lockdown is over\, she and her band will be taking the next steps on her\njourney by touring the record. She’s already come so far but this story is only just\nbeginning. \nEvent: https://www.facebook.com/events/117203843758964 \n18+

SUMMARY:Dirty Sound Magnet
DESCRIPTION:Dirty Sound Magnet is a psychedelic rock power trio from Fribourg\, Switzerland. The band’s DNA can be traced back to the ancestral ‘Golden Age of Rock’ (60s\, 70s)\, but it would be incorrect to think that DSM is…“retro”. The musicians are inspired by contemporary artists and modern production techniques; pushing the boundaries as they see fit. The results are personal\, unique and original. \nSimply put: the Dirty Sound Magnet experience is a mystical journey back to the future… In 2017\, DSM released its first album Western Lies with Berlin-based label Noisolution. The results were instantaneous; with the band winning an award in the category of “best Swiss rock song” for their single ‘Homo Economicus’. Between 2017 and 2020 the band toured relentlessly\, playing over 200 shows in various countries\, including Switzerland\, the UK\, Germany\, Holland\, Belgium\, France\, Spain\, Ireland\, Austria\, Italy\, Hungary\, and the Czech Republic. \n2019 saw the release of their epic full album Transgenic. The album established the band as a leading force of the European psychedelic rock scene. In the midst of their giant tour promoting the album\, Covid-19 arrived and Dirty Sound Magnet had to cancel the remaining shows of the tour. This hiatus from touring allowed the band to go back to basics and rehearse intensively. The experience gained from touring\nmotivated them to produce a live session album named Live Alert that will be released in November 2020. The album showcases the band’s ability to improvise and the virtuosity of the trio. \nDuring this highly productive period\, Dirty Sound Magnet also recorded an ambitious studio album that will be released in 2021. \n18+
