The Unbeat Soul

3rd June 2022 - 7:30 pm - 10:30 pm

$10.00

The Unbeat Soul is London-based songwriter / producer Stephen Langstaff. Started in the first lockdown, the project was unplanned.
Stephen describes it like this: “The Unbeat Soul songs came from suddenly having time to myself in a new studio I’d moved into in

North London. It was about keeping it simple. The music is influenced by all of the 70s singer-songwriter, pop, gospel and classic soul that I listen to.”

“Having worked on a lot of electronic music recently, it was satisfying to limit myself to piano, guitar and drums again. I recorded the tracks without worrying about mistakes or hearing a creaking piano pedal in the mix. Apart from my mate adding some pedal steel, I play all the instruments on these first recordings. Just direct and rootsy. Late nights and a lot of empty coffee cups”

Liverpool born, Langstaff has a varied background producing both electronic music (recently co-writing the synth-wave soundtrack to the Sony Published ‘Hyperbrawl Tournament’) and originally writing and performing in the UK and Nashville as a singer/songwriter, receiving Radio 2 and BBC6 Music support.
His electronic artist project M.A.N.E. produced two singles that have over 2 million Spotify streams. He also produces music for synching to TV and Films as part of Pretty Robotic, using analogue synths and vintage drum machines in partnership with Grammy winning producer Steve Levine.
The Unbeat Soul is his return to the stripped down approach to making music. “I can’t wait to play these songs live. The musicians I’ve got joining me onstage are incredible. This is the first time I’ve made music where my love of artists like Sam Cooke, Michael Kiwanuka and Elliot Smith can probably be heard.”
“I called the project The Unbeat Soul because I think that’s what keeps us all going every day. That part of you that never gets disappointed by life and can’t be knocked down. I’m tempted to say it’s a defiant Northerner thing but I think it’s in everyone and music taps directly into it”.
